Really pains me to see anyone call '77 overrated.

Go ahead and throw out Cornell, Buffalo War Memorial, The Mosque, The Swing (w/its first ever Terrapin as song 1 in set one)all of June and December Winterland, not to mention the ridiculously hot fall run of that year, from your collection.

Say goodbye to the first year of pairing Scarlet with Fire. Shrug your shoulders to the best Help-Slip-Franks ever
performed.
Dismiss the monster Sugarees from the May run.
Ignore the insane Half Steps from 5-7-77 and 11-6-77.
Forget about the incredible Peggy-O's and Jack a Roes from 12-27-77 and 5-17-77 respectively, not to mention all the other great versions that year.

Come on. It may not be your favorite year, bit OVERrated???
I just don't see that as possible, even given subjectivity.

Rant over.

My picks:

Overrated: 1969. Yes, there's Live/Dead which is NOT overrated, but most shows that year reveal a band w/more warts showing than gems in uneven performances that sound (very) dated. Dark Star saw much better versions in later years, esp. 72 and 73.

Underrated: 1981 and 1982

ya id have to agree with that, 77 is personally not one of my favorite years for some reason they are just to tight with there sound for me, dunno if that makes any since but i do agree that the best 1/2 steps, help>slip and maybe wharf rats came from 77, and that it seems to me theres no denying there on top of there game. btw i personally think 5-17-77 1/2 step is just as good as 11/6 and others mentioned as the best from 77 check it out and see if u agree

Oh yes--5-17-77 1/2 step IS a winner...I could've mentioned that one as well (as it being an overall amazing show).

That's my point--I would never say objectively you can insist any one year is THE best...but you CAN objectively say whether a year is overrated...there are just too many examples of universally agreed-upon outstanding shows from '77 to put it in that category. Dick's first pick was from '77 and many many others followed. For good reason.

BTW, I agree on your assesment of 1978 as underrated. I've just been discovering some gems from that year, including 4/16/78, 4/12/78, 1/22/78, and 4/24/78 among others.

I see it as a high powered year of shows, albeit sloppier than 1977. The tightness of the playing that year is a major reason I love '77, but I can see how it may come across as slightly too polished for some likings. But Overrated? No sir.
